    great question! i'll bite!

almost all of us have a brain that tells us what to do, how to treat others, how to deal with our own responsibilities ... these things give a person good or bad character...

so, how can one be characterless? i would guess that while everyone with a brain, heart, conscience, will be able to display good or bad character, there are a few people who exhibit neither. for example, if i were laying in a hospital bed in a coma, people would only be able to say things, good or bad, in the past tense. if i'm paralyzed, like in ALS, and i can no longer manifest things to which others attribute character, then, i might appear to not have character.

so, what happens the moment i come out of the coma? i immediately have good or bad character.

that's my stab at this one. again, interesting question!
