Yes.

If you have a king and a rook, it is possible.
-
Yes ... if the two players have only their kings, then it is a draw/stalemate ... but if one player has only a king while the other player has a king and a rook, then a checkmate can be forced.
-
You start to move the opponents king back against one of the sides by first using the rook to cut off an entire rank or file, then positioning your king to be right in front of their king. Once this happens you check them with the rook and move them back one row, they cant move foward because your king is there. Eventually they are backed up to a side and cant back up anymore and its mate.

Yes, you can checkmate with just king and rook.

YES actually it is the least amount of pieces that you can have with the exception of the queen of course. but it is hard and I think that I have pulled it off only once but I am not that great any way

K+R vs. K is the second easiest forced win (after K+Q vs. K). You can probably teach yourself to do it, and you'll learn a lot working it out for yourself. What you have to watch out for is not to stalemate your opponent -- don't get him in a position where it's his move, and he's not in check, but he has no legal move. That's a draw, and the game is over.
