a flnt was the most common form of lighting an item for a fire, once a spark was created, it was helf aainst usually small thin dry pieces of leaves or grass to get a flame burning, but often, a fire was kept going for as long as possible so as not to loose the ablity to cook, keep warm, heat water, have light etc. a fire could be kept going an oven/fireplace for weeks or longer.

I actually did a little research into this myself as I was wondering if there was a standard fire lighting method between the days of flint and steel and the modern match. After countless articles and web pages on the subject I found numerous experiments with various chemicals being added to the tinder to make flint and steel sparks more reliable and effective, but it doesn't seem that any of them was vastly more popular or widely accepted than any of the others until the friction match came along.
