  • Very light colors - whites or pale pastels. Not too heavily saturated. Think "Light and Bright". Use at least an eggshell paint - do not use matte or flat paint. Sheen will reflect light. Place a very large mirror at the end of the hall. Make sure lighting doesn't have dark spots or fade down the hallway - consider scones on the walls or track lighting or spot lights going the length of the hall. If this is the top level of the structure - consider a skylight or lighttube.
  • Paint it a light color, hang some lights from the ceiling or walls (no floor lamps), maybe use some mirrors? Be sure it's well-lit. Oh and make sure it's not cluttered, no stuff piled up on the floor. That will make it seem even narrower.
  • For some reason mirrors at the end of long, narrow hallways creep me out. The upstairs hallways in my parents' home is long, dark, and narrow. The previous owners have mirrors on all the bedroom doors and sometimes a person can't help but get startled by their own reflections.
  • keep the colours light and neutral, as well mirrors will help to introduce light, as well as altered dimensions, if the celing has a roof cavity above it, you could install a celing solar light, which will flood the area with natural light !
  • I read a FS book once that said that in a long narrow hallways to do the following: place small mirrors on one side of the wall and paintings/pictures on the other side of the wall. That's a FS cure for a long narrow hallway. You could also try putting a couple of evenly spaced lights on the ceilings. You don't have to get into rewiring anythin. You could just buy the inexpensive battery operated decorative lights that you could just stick to the surface, they run on AA Batteries and are about less than $ 10.00. Try to ones that are plastic and look like cut glass because they're pretty, and avoid the cheap looking ones. Whatever you do absoulutely don't get four of each: the mirrors or the pictures, or the lights. The number four in Chinese mythology means death. Instead go online and look up the fs meanings of the numbers and get an amount that's good.
