My husband does hardwood floors for a living. The gap is normal - it's actually necessary to get the boards knocked together with the tool they use. It should be close enough to the wall to be covered with 1/4-1/2" shoe molding, or a nice baseboard. Or, heck, you could just leave it bare... though it'll attract dirt, and you'll probably have to hoover it out once in a while.

I'd put some 1/4 round moulding over it.

The wood floor needs that gap to allow for movement of the wood. It's usually covered up with baseboard. Get some pretty baseboard, prep them and nail them in place and that gap will be covered and the floor will still be able to expand if needed. If you are going to refinish the floor be sure to do the baseboard last.
