  • It's such a hard habit to figure out. It's like nail biting. Why do they do it, how to get them to stop. You have to figure out if it's a medical reason, as there are a couple of reasons they might do it, including mites, lice or a syndrome called Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). Or it could be mental non-medical reason. Before just thinking it's a bad habit, you should get the bird checked out by an avian vet who can make sure it's not medical. Then if it's not, you can try to isolate what is causing it like: humidity, boredom, stress, hormones.
  • One of the main reasons an Eclectus can feather pluck is if it's on the incorrect diet. Eclectus parrots require a natural soft food diet. They can also develop allergies to certain foods & that can cause feather plucking. Irritating itches & feathers also do this, a good long bath early in the morning on a regular basis can help as well as aloe sprays every now & then. These are the main causes with Eclectus parrots specifically but there are many other causes too but it's hard to know what would be causing it when the description is vague. And take your bird to an avian vet that knows eclectus parrots well. There are many avian vets out there that are not familiar with ekkies & often miss diagnose them. They do not fall into the 'general parrots' category when it comes to their health. EDIT: I neglected to mention that please do be careful what pellet mix you offer to your eclectus parrot! They can be the number one cause for toe tapping & feather picking. If you go to the site mentioned bellow there is information about their health & diet in their. There is also a wealth of information out their that I can get for you regarding all of this too. You can also visit here for more information: www.eclectusparrots.net
  • They will only grow back when he stops picking at them. **Okay downrater. Do you know the answer??
  • the re growth depends on how long he's plucked and if he's plucked to skin meaning all down is removed as well. ok nutritionally...I breed this species, so if you really want to fix this you have to spend some money. First order an entirely new food...I only use TropiMix by hagen. It is expensive about 70 bucks a 20 lb bag but well well worth it. next start feeding only organic fruits and veggies that have been washed and skinned. Go to the nearest health food store and purchase coconut oil and red palm oil. Also purchase aloe vera gel and mix it in a spray bottle to use as a body spray on her daily. make oatmeal and take a bag of frozen veggies thaw and add to the oatmeal, then put in a few drops of both oils, make enough to put the left overs in the fridge for the next few days feedings. This will bring the bird into a proper nutritional state. Now it may be a neurological problem thats causeing the plucking. You say his, but I'm not always entirely sure of a sex post on an ekkie until you tell me the color of the bird, if green then your right it's male, if red then it's female. The neurological problems are different in the sexes...so get back to me with a color and I'll try to help from there. Don't let my site level fool you, I've been breeding these birds many many years. Also make up a mix of oatmeal,
