A big question, with a very small answer. From the research that has been done to date life has been found on Earth in the coldest, driest and darkest regions. This life tends to be microbial or bacterial - simpler life forms are more able to adapt to survive. In direct temperatures of over 40C proteins begin to denature on our planet, so life using our building blocks could survive on much warmer planets, and when the temperatures get low enough atomic movement ceases so there is a lower limit that could not be breached. The difficulty is that we don't know if our perception of life is the only way life could evolve. We are carbon based, but SciFi writers have postulated life that is silicon based. What properties that life would have I cannot say. I would tend toward their being life elsewhere and turn round an old expression to read "Where there is hope, there is life".
