I would have to say that neither MIG or TIG welding would be sufficient to hold large metal structural members together, but it's been a long time since I had any contact with welding.

I remember seeing an episode of Monster House where they were required by the building inspecter to use manual arc welding on a project in California. The welds needed to be "Full penitration" welds. It took them forever and almost didn't make it because they had planned on using a MIG welder.

The best process to use is stick or smaw. duh! like a 6010 electrode which is made for penetration or maybe a 7018!!
