From the ages of about 6-15, yeah, people are pretty mean to people they like. From there on in though, it's all about being as nice as possible. He/she ain't gonna go for you if you're a cow/asshole.

most of my crushes have always been good friends. i was only mean to them when they pissed me off, but it wasn't for liking them so much as they did something to damage the friendship

When I was younger I think I was kind of mean to some of my crushes, I'm not sure why either. I think it was one of those, "I don't want you to know I like you....sooooo, I'm gonna throw play-doh at you!"
