In my opinion, establishing paternity is VERY important, even if you don't want anything to do with the father. You may find that you need the child support--raising a child for 18+ years is expensive. And at the very least, you don't want the father to change his mind a few years down the line, file paternity and request that he is given legal rights. At the very least, DNA testing is necessary to make sure that he is the father and then you can go from there with a lawyer. The Department of Health and Human Services in your state can help you with this.

First, child support isn't about what you want, it is about providing for his child. Second, he has legal rights once he is determined to be the father. At anytime he can petition the court for paternity.

I'll bet money you'll regret the child support decision. The child deserves to know who its father is, as well.

Putting the father's name on the birth certificate has nothing to do with his legal rights. With or without the name on the records, he can go to court and petition for custody. The Birth Certificate is not a legal document, it is a document for the official registration of the birth. The more information you provide on the Certificate, the better for your child in the future. I am in the process of trying to get a registered certificate for my son so he can apply for medical benefits after a severe stroke at age 43, and it is turning out to be very difficult.

HE DID NOT MIND WHEN HE WAS ENJOYING HIMSELF NINE MONTHS AGO. SOMETIMES AFTER A CHILD IS BORN, PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR MINDS. I WOULD PUT HIM ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILD'S SAKE.
