From Greek mythology of Olympus and Hades. Olympus being high in the clouds, peaceful, serene and Hades being far down under ground, our souls being dumped into this river of pain! Religions aren't just made up out of thin air, they are evolutions of older religions. Hence they have similar, if not the same, icons and symbols as their predecessors. The image of Christian God is Zeus, the Halos are sun disks found in Egyptian religion! There are so many.
