Question

Help answer this question below.

I ran over a nail, which stuck in a tire. Now the tire leaks air. Can this be fixed? If so, will the tire be safe to drive on after the fix? It's a Goodyear with maybe 10K miles.

Absolutely. take the tire to a reputable tire shop. they will remove the nail and repair the tire.

If the tire is in overall good shape, you should not have any problems with it, out on the road. i have had many flat tires and many tires repaired, without future problems.

Yes it can be safely repaired. Make sure that the tire shop patches the tire from the inside, and doesn't try to use a "plug". Plugs are quick, and usually hold air, but are really not the best way to go. In my younger years, I worked in a freeway service station and repaired literally hundreds of tires.

I've gotten tires fixed with no problem and at reasonable prices. The only problem you’ll run into is if the puncture is in the sidewall of the tire. That sort of damage cannot be patched or repaired.

The quality of the tire determines the likelihood of failure after repair (primarily caused by tread separation around the puncture). Goodyear makes both lower and higher end tires so I’m not sure which you have. Age is also a factor. A four to five year old tire has a greater chance of failure than a two to three year old tire because the rubber degrades over time.

Get your tire repaired someplace reputable where they will patch it on the inside and possibly the outside as well. Personally, with my Michelins, I have a cheap repair kit with a plug I can basically just glue into the puncture. I trust it on that tire because it is of high quality. I wouldn't use it on a tire brand I'm not familiar with, though.

If the flat is on a front tire, I would recommend getting it rotated to the rear. If it goes flat again, you have less of a chance of losing control of the vehicle.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago and they repaired it without even removing the tire. It took about 5 minutes and only cost 3 dollars.
