  • Interesting question; here's the definitions from the Oxford Dictionary, I'm guessing it's subjective and a sauce might be considered a condiment though the Latin origin might suggest otherwise. condiment |ˈkändÉ™mÉ™nt| noun a substance such as salt or ketchup that is used to add flavor to food. ORIGIN late Middle English : from Latin condimentum, from condire ‘to pickle.’ gravy |ˈgrāvÄ“| noun ( pl. -vies) 1 the fat and juices exuding from meat during cooking. • a sauce made from these juices together with stock and other ingredients. 2 informal unearned or unexpected money. ORIGIN Middle English (denoting a spicy sauce): perhaps from a misreading (as gravé) of Old French grané, probably from grain ‘spice,’ from Latin granum ‘grain.’
  • I guess it could be...chutney is considered a condiment and I think cranberry sauce might also be as well. Normally I think of a condiment as relish, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup..something you apply to a sandwich for flavor. If you take a broader view and think of a condiment as something in addition to your main meal to enhance the flavor, then maybe! :)
  • It is now, even though it's not.
  • Gravy is neither a sauce or a condiment, but it has a category of its own. Despite many condiments being named as sauces, a condiment is something one adds to food as a flavour enhancer (tomato sauce, mint sauce, horseraddish sauce etc.) after the food has been prepared. A sauce is a liquid the food is cooked in or added to the food as part of the cooking process, such as: Coq au vin (chicken in a red wine sauce) pasta with a carbonara sauce pasta in napoli sauce spaghetti with a bolognese sauce pork in a sweet and sour sauce beef in a black bean sauce, etc. Gravy (or jus) although similar to a sauce in appearance and cosistency, is actually a bi-product of cooking meat; it is created from the juice of the animal that is being cooked. Traditionally, water (or wine) and cornflour are added to the juices to make the gravy, which is then poured over the food after preparation, like a condiment. Therefore as it is not a sauce or condiment, it desrves its own category.
  • No, a beverage.
