Hip hop originates from, of course, west african music. It travelled to Jamaica where it got that rhythmic beats (Raggea) and it was also there that the idea of DJ mixing got its start (Dub). It was brought over with American soldiers in the 60's. The actual term "hip hop" supposedly comes from Keith Cowboy immitating the cadence of marching soldier. Cowboy later worked the "hip hop" cadence into a part of his stage performance, which was quickly copied by other artists; for example the opening of the song "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang. *This brought to you courtesy of Wikiknowseverything! Somewhere between the 70's and now hip-hop became more melodic and disparated itself with rap hardcore rap. And I have no idea about hip hop dances. I'm lucky just watch without embarassing myself. ;)
