Does the 17" monitor have mechanical (knob) or electronic (on screen) contrast settings? If it is electronic, you may be able to reset the unit to defaults by unplugging it (Not just turning it off) for an hour or so and trying again.

Similiar- one time I changed the screen resolution to too high a number, the screen went black. I put in a Windows installation disk and choose a repair. The disk reset the setting and I was back on line in 5 minutes. If you do not have a disk maybe you can borrow one from somebody. Remember to choose the repair, not a full installation.
