  • Your local gas station takes the smallest bite out of your pocket. For the most part, they only charge .02 - .06 per gallon. Meanwhile, state and federal taxes charge as much as .78, and possibly more. Then there's the actual cost of getting the stuff out of the ground in the first place, and the cost of refining using 30 year old equipment because environmentalists won't allow them to build more, and the price has no choice but to skyrocket.
