  • Yes, lay Buddhists do occasionally end up conceiving of Buddha as a God of sorts and worshiping him as a man. What Buddha is meant to be actually is the physical manifestation of our own human potential. Buddhahood - or becoming a Buddha - through enlightenment is achievable to all people in this lifetime. Theoretically, every gilded statue of Buddha is supposed to be an inspiration towards feeling what is inside of everyone one of us. Sometimes this gets lost and instead the concept is perverted into idolatry.
