Most middle American families ate balanced meals based on the food pyramid that was published at the time. Families ate a meat, a vegetable or two and usually had bread with dinner. Kids still drank milk at every meal. Casseroles were becoming very popular, as were one-pot or crock-pot meals. Cold salads including mixed fruits, jellos and salads of cold veggies in sauces were also popular. Themed meals were trendy. Packages and convenience foods were just becoming popular.
