  • The pitching rubber is part of the field, like a rock. If the ball hits nothing but the mound and then rolls into foul territory before being touched...it is a foul ball. Strike on the batter. In order for a batted ball to be fair it must either touch a person or a base, otherwise it is a foul ball.
  • Here is what happened...during the top/1st of yesterday's Cubs/Dodgers game, with 2 out, no one on, Derek Lee hit a ball that hit the pitcher's foot, on a fly, and then ricocheted into foul territory, also on a fly. It was scored a single. BUT, the announcer stated, "had that ball only struck the mound, and not the pitcher's foot, it would have been a foul ball strike.
  • Here's the rule: Rule 2.00 (Foul Ball) Comment: A batted ball not touched by a fielder, which hits the pitcher’s rubber and rebounds into foul territory, between home and first, or between home and third base is a foul ball.
  • It depends on where the ball rolls out. If it rolls out before the bag its foul, if you rolls out past the bag its fair. Any time the ball touches fair territory beyond the bag its a fair ball. Think of a double down the line that ends up in the corner.
  • If the ball crosses into foul territory before crossing first of thrid base, it's a foul ball.
  • if it rolls foul in the infield it is a strike. if it gets past 1st or 3rd it is a fair ball.
