How do you know that "this" is simply an excuse for lazy or dishonest reporting? I would beg to differ. I have quite a few journalist friends who I know very well, and I've read some of the fine articles they've written, some which include anonymous sources. I have no reason to believe that they are false. But thats just me, I guess

No, a bigger problem in Journalism is the fabricated source. Anonymous sources serve a purpose -- they allow the Journalist to provide the information and indicate that it wasn't fabricated, yet also indicate that there is some reason why the source can not be identified at the time of the story.
