  • I have been using the free version of zone alarm, on both of my computers for at least 3 years, and I never had a problem with it. I don't know if it is the best one, but it does the job for me..Good Luck. click link→it is the one all the way to the right side→ http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/znalm/comparison.jsp
  • Software firewalls (ones that run on the computer) are adequate, but they do not offer as much protection as a hardware firewall. Many routers (Linksys, D-link, etc.) are also hardware firewalls. If you attach your computer directly to your cable modem or DSL and are running Windows, you are asking for trouble. Ideally, you should hook up a router/firewall in between the cable modem (or DSL) and your home computer. An issue with software firewalls is that they run as a process on your computer. This takes up resources on your computer that could be used for other apps. Also, if the software firewall process crashes, then your computer is unprotected. Hardware firewalls can crash too, but they run many fewer process than a Windows computer, so there is less interaction with other processes.
