"Can an outsider join the Amish church/community?"
"A local Amishman recently remarked, "You do not need to move here to adopt a lifestyle of simplicity and discipleship. You can begin wherever you are." Yes, it is possible for outsiders, through conversion and convincement, to join the Amish community, but we must quickly add that it seldom happens. First, the Amish do not evangelize and seek to add outsiders to their church. Second, outsiders would need to live among the Amish and demonstrate a genuine conversion experience and faith that results in a changed lifestyle. Third, it is extremely difficult for anyone who has not been raised without electricity, automobiles, and other modern conveniences to adjust to the austere lifestyle of the Amish. And to truly be a part of the Amish community one would need to learn the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect."

This was going to be a comment, but I prefer to post as an answer instead, so that it won't have to be sent to bignose as a reply and you will actually end up reading this when I post it... but anyways:

You're not American, right? I don't think you are... but anyways. This is the recent event bignose was talking about. It happened earleir this week.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Amish_school_shooting

((Please don't rate this down for inaccuracy or "not answering the question"... I know someone will...))

I am also having a huge problem linking things on here (it depends... sometimes it works, sometimes not...), quite frequently so just act as if you're going to post a comment and I think it works at that point. Or just google "Amish school shooting"

I'm not an authority on Amish but it's a Christian denomination, so I suppose you can just join it in a similar way that you could join United Methodists, Presbyterians, etc, with a statement of faith and your intentions.

Some groups only speak German so you might need to learn that if you don't already know the language.

it is simple... do you have 15-20 years to spare???

    the reality is...

You would need to live by these people and grow with them in there community and care for them and understand them as people and their religion for some time. You would have to live by there way of life and code of dress/spirit/ and general way of living in their surroundings.

There is no easy ...... just go over to the community and fill out a member ship card here.

We are talking TIME and DEDICTION and really wanting to live this way of life..

The Amish don't generally take converts. They are a very closed, separatist group. They only speak English (which they learn in school) when they are out in public. At home, they speak Pennsylvania Dutch, which is an older dialectic of High German. I don't even know if you can study PA Dutch anymore. Kutztown College used to offer it, but I don't know if they still do.

Now, the Mennonites, which are an offshoot of the Amish and often even more conservative, do take on converts. Quite a while ago, I want to say in the 1920's or 30's, the Mennonites became very evangelical and have sent missionaries all over the country and all over the world. If you win a convert, you have to have a church for them to attend. The Mennonites have branches of their church that don't look any different from any other church in America, and they have the Old Order churches, which use horses for transportation and don't use electricity, just like the Amish. They also have the Churches of Charity, which were designed to make it easier for Mennonites who weren't raised Mennonite.
