  • The Hebrew alphabet doesn't not have a letter J. There are two different ways to make the sound of the letter I or Y in Hebrew, using the letter "yod" (sometimes pronounced as "yud") or using nikud, the points (vowels) under the letters (used mostly for children and learners.) Because hebrew does not have a letter J, they use the letter "gimmel" which is pronounced like the letter g in English and add a ' to denote that it's a modified letter for a letter that doesn't exist in Hebrew. The J does not have it's origins in Hebrew at all. The letter I and Y are simply interchangeable in Hebrew because there is only one such letter.
