Does the M/F pay gap show that US society is still chauvinist or something else like, perhaps, different choices in career or life / work balance?

Well, the pay gap is evaluated on the basis of comparing equivalent positions. So it would be comparing a male CFO to a female CFO. Or a Male plumber to a Female plumber. So it clearly indicates a bias in our culture.

Women make different choices in work, spend less time at work, commute shorter distances, take many months or years off work. They will not get the same results as men in general.
