When acting in an epic film, why do people portraying, Greeks, Romans, Russians, Germans,etc. speak with a British accent, even if they really aren't British themselves?

I've actually never noticed that. I guess I fall into the category of "suspension of disbelief" so I pay attention to the storyline and the quality of acting and whether I believe what is going on rather than accents, makeup, clothing, whatever! :)

My 9-year-old asked me why everyone in Star Wars had a British accent, and I started in on this huge BS diatribe about how successful and expansive the British empire had become in th 17th and 18th centuries and how they colonized space... then my wife gave me that LOOK. You know the look.
