I haven't... never heard of an onion tasting sweet like that, however, I do know that russians would eat raw onions in the manner of an apple. Kind of. Just chuck the whole onion, skin and all, onto a barbecue or in the oven. When it comes out, it'll be sweet and juicy, although hot.

I've never did it, but I used to work with some European guys that would eat two or three onions a day like that.
