It is a tradition in the NHL for members of teams making it to the post season to allow their facial hair to grow for the duration of their post season run.

Its called a "Playoff Beard" and my fiance sports the look too! And so do all of his friends in support of the cup! I love hockey man, but they take it to a whole new level! Its basically just a superstitious practice of NHL players not to shave their beards during the playoffs. The player stops shaving when his team enters the playoffs, and does not shave until his team is eliminated or wins the Stanley Cup. I think the tradition was started in the 80's by the NY Islanders actually.

Hockey players are the most superstitious of all pro athletes. I would have to say it brings them a feeling of luck when they play.

Because it makes them feel tough and it is way cool. They are roughing it and they are just focused on the game. It is a spiritual / psychic thing.

Actually this was started by the Islanders dynasty of the 80's and kind of became a tradition. Hell, four stanley cups, i wouldn't be shaving either!
