  • did you start using a different kind of paper than usual when this problem started? some printers can't handle certain kinds of paper. If you still have the manual, check it. Also, paper that is wrinkled or otherwise damaged often is the cause of printer jams. The most likely cause is just some dirt, dust or other crap, even dried ink in the works. Try using a Q-tip with rubbing alchohol (not the alcohol you drink:) and cleaning stuff, especially the rollers that pick up the paper. Then, "print" some blank sheets- go into a word document and hit return a bunch of times until you have 5 pages or so, without typing ANYTHING, and then send the "document" to the printer. This may clear up anything that you couldn't get to while cleaning stuff. Is the printer just jamming individual sheets, or is it taking up the entire stack of pages? If it's taking up the whole stack, your printer may be "set" for the wrong kind of paper. Also, try NOT totally filling the tray all the way in any case- see if only filling it halfway or 3/4 full solves the problem. If you really need it to work consistently, try only loading the exact number of pages that you're about to print, right before you actually send the job to the printer, and just have a stack of paper next to the printer. If you try all these things and your printer still jams constantly, then your printer may be broken. Call HP and see if they have any other tips, otherwise you'll have to send it in for repairs- or just get a new printer if it was a cheap-o printer. Bottom line- if the printer cost less than $150, it's probably not worth repairing in my opinion, because any professional repair will most likely cost almost as much as the whole printer.
