When I have travelled abroad I always took my passport, drivers license and birth certificate.

I bring a lot of legal documents, my cellphone, and my PSP. So I'll bring those along. Money too, lots of stuff to buy there.

Passport, driver's license, and a Japanese-English quick reference translation book. You can bring money, but there are plenty of ATMs out there that accept VISA, NYCE, etc you shouldn't have to worry about cash--it automatically converts your funds from your bank account to the currency (Yen).
