it depends on what type of piercing you're talking about. There are many different types of piercings. One good recommendation is to know how to sanitize your infected area. Go to your piercer and ask them some questions. 2.Wash your hands daily to prevent germs. 3.Remove any thing that might get in the way of your piercing, for example, if you have pierced ears, pin your hair back or if you have your belly button pierced, wear smaller shirts. 4. replace the old earring/belly ring/tongue ring/etc. that you currently have with a new clean one. 5. if the infection persists, see a doctor about it. There are a few cases where some people who have infected piercings need surgery, and some don't. Please see your doctor about your infection. An infection is very serious.

Sea salt soaks are the best. Twice a day...NO MORE THEN THAT!!!

Don't play with it... Make sure and wash your hands well with soap and water before touching it. Soak it in warm salt water for 5 minutes twice a day. If it still bothers you make a warm compress and hold it on the piercing for a few minutes. (Just a hot damp rag) If the infection is REALLY bad, flush it (once) with rubbing alcohol. No hydrogen peroxide.

The other advice on here is sound, but I would like to comment on the "without having the piercing close up" part of your question. If it is a fresh piercing, the jewellery should not be removed at all, therefore it shouldn't close up. If it is indeed infected DO NOT REMOVE THE JEWELLERY. This can cause the holes to close trapping the infection inside. I would try the Sea Salt Soaks and maybe a visit to your piercer...
