It could be a rakhi, which is a holy thread, tied onto the wrist by a sister. It doesnt necessarily need to be a biological sister, it could be symbolic. Someone close enough to you to be your brother. Also keep in mind in India friendships of the opposite sex were not encouraged and so this way, it makes it ok?
