I've driven to Canada many times without a passport. You just need to bring a picture ID, Birth Certificate, and proof of residency which can be bills. They want to make sure it's you and that you'll be coming back, that's all.

The answer depends on your citizenship. Some citizens require passports and visas to enter Canada -- some do not. Where are you from?

They can ask you for your passport at any time now, but the problem isn't leaving the country. It's getting back in to the US. Most of the time they don't ask about it but there are times they do and I wouldn't risk it as how else do you get back in?

I just looked this up for my niece. If you are driving you do not need a passport yet. You need to bring a government issued drivers license (with your picture on it) for identification AND.... your birth certificate (not a copy) for proof of US Citizenship. In June of 2009 you will then need a passport even if you travel there by car. Hope this helps.
