I worked at Wal Mart and never was told to or taught to receive food stamps, so I don't really understand why they would do this. Are they getting a donation or something? I have never seen this, but some of the same store do things differently.
Seems like this bit of mis-information is from someone's book. http://www.democraticwings.com/democraticwings/archives/womens_rights/001318.php
Sounds like a load of crap. More importantly, if their workers qualify for food stamps...what exactly is the problem. Yes I know....Wal-Mart, Microsoft, etc are all evil.....please, what nonsense. Wal-Mart probably does more to help the low income family than any government assistance programs ever will.
I've had friends & family that has worked there & they've never mentioned that. Maybe someone is asking to charge or something & their policy won't allow it so they've encouraged them to apply for food stamps.
I have never heard of this portion of their training.
I worked there twice and it was never mentioned to us.. they do get a tax incentive for hiring anyone on "assistance" so that's all I can figure but I think you have to be on assistance before you get hired for that to take affect so.. Idk.. never heard that..

You're reading Why does walmart teach their employees to apply for food stamps?
Comments
Walmart does actually get a bonus for hiring workers who are low income (welfare, medicaid, food stamps, etc) from what I have seen online, but this isn't special treatment. The same applies to other businesses.
I know the Genovese here (before it went under) always had a few mentally handicapped workers come in once a week because it was good business monetarily and from a public relations perspective. It was a good thing to do as well, but I'm sure the other incentives didn't hurt.

Yes, our wal mart hires handicapped employees too. It's a good self image and usually they have the jobs that it doesn't seem to hurt anything. I don't care who says "hello" to me as long as they are nice to me. I think that is good for them, even if they are doing it for selfish reasons(good publicity) then the handicapped are getting something out of it too. So it helps both out.
