  • There may be a short in the pump wiring. There may be a fault in your system pressure switch that is not turning the pump off when your supply tank meets adequate pressure and the pump may be continuing to run until it overheats and the pump overload protection shuts the pump off. When it cools it will start again. It does not sound like a well problem, but you will need a pump technician to check out your pump and wiring.
  • 9 times out of ten, your starting capacitor is going out. A three wire motor will stay in starting winding and overheat if your box components are not up to par. It sounds as if you have a Franklin 1 1/2 HP box with a single red reset button on the bottom.
  • If the reset kicks out in the control box, it could be start capacitor, voltage relay or running capacitor. You can check amps to assure it is not overdrawing. If problem continues, the motor windings are possibly expanding and locking up the rotor when the motor is hot. If you don't want to hire a professional, you can try the controls first off. If your pressure tank does not have adequate air, this will short cycle the well pump making it overheat. I don't think your well is the problem.
