Well when i watch my farrier she uses the file and makes it flat and smooth until it turns white. Then she takes the hoof knife and digs lightly along the sides of it to trim the sides of the frog... I am not a pro though.. I just watch closley

YOU just use a hoof knife to trim the frog down a little. You don't cut it off as the horse needs it but you do trim off parts that are loose and hanging there. We often would do that during routine hoof cleaning, too.
