The plates were returned to the Angel Moroni, who bore them back to heaven once they had been fully translated and three witnesses had seen them and bore written testimony to that fact. It is my postulation that they were not permitted to remain on earth so that more people would rely on a testimony by faith in God and revelation by the Holy Ghost that they were real rather than their own eyes of the temporal reality of the plates.
