That depends on how you define "freedom". On the one hand, left to their own devices they will do nothing but Youtube, Myspace, and Facebook all the time. On the other hand, net-nanny software doesn't work; it lets pR0n through while blocking legitimate searches. Try writing a paper on breast cancer sometime and see if it gets blocked. I mean, just because one is in charge of a system, that doesn't mean that they are truly a sysadmin. Many people who setup/maintain a network are morons. I beleive that they should have freedom, but make it clear that that freedom has it's price. Catch them spending too much time messing around instead of educating themselves then clamp down and take that freedom away. One other thing to bear in mind is that *occasionally* clamping down on freedom will cause a student or two to find ways around stuff. I'm not talking posting AB questions asking, "Do U no NE g00d prxy sytz?"; I am talking about certifiable hackers forced to the black-hat side of things. I will neither confirm nor deny that I may or may not have learned a few things about computers as a result of such measures ;) Fortunately, the majority of people in the US today (schoolchildren and adults) are too lazy to learn anything, but the possibility is there.
