In a manual transmission car is it more economical to cruise in 5th gear at lower speeds to save gas?

Depending on your engine, you want to stay in whatever gear keeps your RPMs about midway between idling and time to shift up. Low speeds (20 mph?) in fifth gear are going to be very tough on the engine, so you'll want to shift down to second most likely.
