Look in your manual find & check what is called 'Fuel Pump Control' device.Then check your 'Fuel Regulator' & Fuel intake valves.
check compression that would help to see if your timing is off,if compression is +-10% on all piston(150psi) etc. p.s check your crank sensor too.good look
Perhaps your timing belt. This problem sounds similar to a problem I had with my Honda, it was my timing belt.

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus, and occassionally instead of turning over and starting I only hear a loud clicking sound from under the hood?

You're reading 1992 Ford Taurus V6 3.0 L will crank but not start. check wires, plugs & coil the fuel pump makes a whirling sound & fuel comes out of the filter, its like fuel isn't getting to the engine anything I'm missing ? There is gas in the tank.
