  • Has anything changed? Different type of kitty litter? Change of location? Is the kitty litter changed regularly? What do you wash the litter box out with? Any cleaners with ammonia are repellent to a cat's sense of smell.
  • Sounds behavioral. Cats can do this when there's a change in environment, change in persons around them, change in litter/litterbox, pretty much a change in any normal daily routine or surrounding. It could be a sign of stress or his attempt at getting your attention to show that there's something new that he doesn't like. Have you changed your working hours lately? Or do you have a new significant other who is taking all your time? If your cat has a certain spot where he likes to go, try moving the box to that location. You may even try getting a brand new litterbox so he has 2 to choose from. There are certaiin medications that a vet can prescribe for behavioral problems if that is what he believes this to be. But definitely call your vet, he's the only one who can really give you some insight into what's going on since your kitty can't tell you himself.
