  • when you do it to gratify yourself yes it is
  • It's one of the perks of volunteering ,that you get a good feeling knowing you made a difference. But I don't go in thinking about what's in it for me. You wouldn't be able to last long if that was your motive.
  • So what if it is? I couldn't care less WHY some people like to help others. It's more than sufficient that they do so.
  • Not always. I believe that altruism is possible. However, often there is some selfishness involved on some level. It can be debated that it's to make yourself feel good about yourself, build up hours so you can get into certain course that requires hours, coersion by others. Personally I do it mostly because I have a belief and I follow that belief which is that mental pain is bad and shouldn't exist with the exception of mourning. I'm open to the idea that pain, existence anything at all may not matter. Is it selfish to follow my belief? a hope in mankind that really doesn't matter to me personally as I know that there are genuinely mean people out there.
  • I don't think there are many true volunteers who have a selfish agenda behind volunteering, but for those who do, they don't last long. I also believe that those who complain about the genuiness of people who volunteer are the ones who don't do it.
  • Im a teen volunteer at the public library
  • Not in the least. It is a part of selflessness.
  • I think it depends on the intent of the person. Does it really matter, though, if they are helping others and doing a good job?
  • It's a catch 22 flipped, a lot of people do it to get into college or work related fields, but they are also doing a service ...Its all good in the end, sometimes our most self serving acts wind up being the most important..perspective from where you started and where you ended and the difference you made even if unintentionally
  • No, because even if there's an additional agenda on the part of the volunteer, it's still providing aid and assistance to some greater need. I believe we will see more and more volunteers as the Baby Boomers retire. I hope so anyway.
  • It sounds like you have never volunteered or you wouldnt make such a self serving remark? In case you dont know it there are 100s of organizations out in the world (not just the usa) who can not function or provide needed services to literally thousands of other people without the use of dedicated volunteers. If these organizations had to pay people / many would close up shop. Then the people they serve would suffer. You dont have to care to volunteer but if you care volunteering is easier.
