  • The league that started the 3-point field goal was the American Basketball League (ABL). They did it back in 1961. The league only lasted 1 1/2 seasons though and their only other contribution to the basketball world was the widening of the free-throw lanes. In 1967, when the American Basketball Association began play it was part of the original rules and actually was a marketing tool to emphasize the difference between the NBA and the ABA. The NBA didn't adopt the 3-point field goal until 1979.
  • 1979-80 The NBA adopts the 3-point field goal (23' 9" from the basket). Chris Ford (Boston Celtics) makes the first official 3-pointer.
