"We Built This City" lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, best known for his longtime collaboration with Elton John. The city that the band is singing about in the album version of this song has been generally thought to be San Francisco, California, (the traffic report in the bridge references the Golden Gate Bridge and "The City by the Bay". According to singer Grace Slick, it was actually written about early-1970s Los Angeles.

I saw a show on the Biography Channel that had Grace Slick on it. It is driving me nuts trying to remember the name of the actual show. In this interview she basically said that 'We Built this City' was a load of pretentious crap because rock and roll was not around long enough to have been the foundation of any city. I have no idea what city the writer was alluding to, but thought the singers take on the song was interesting.
