i would say transport or communication
-
Possibly the internet. Though it has it's share of abuses, the exchange of information it makes possible may eventually put an end to ignorance and prejudice. Now it is possible to be neighbors with somebody half way around the world and work together to solve common problems. They say "think globally, act locally", local just got a whole new meaning!
-
Electricity or cars.
-
It's a matter of opinion. The wheel? The printing press? The internet? The zipper? Personally, I like those things for squeezing the liquid out of tea-bags!
-
The written word. It allows us to communicate information to people not only across geographical boundaries, but across the boundaries of time as well. It helps us to leran from the past, record our thoughts and observations and share our experiences with others who we may never even have met. The world wouldn't be the same without it.
-
Electricity because it opened the doors for many other things! =)
-
The Robin Day chair, because I use it every day and people don't appreciate it's brilliance and simplicity. Waht would we do without it!
-
Movable type, without which we would still be in the High Middle Ages.
-
The greatest invention is most likely the on/of switch, it's used in all electronic transmissions and data transfer.
-
soap, without it, life expectance would still be in the 30's
-
music, all kinds of it!
-
The piano... My life revolves around it. I write, perform, and make my living with it. It also helped me get out of depression and other funks life has handed me.
-
Language. This is not the same as speech, which just one vehicle for language. This is the most basic common ground for interaction between people, whether it's written or spoken or gestured. Language has allowed for everything else humans have ever accomplished.
-
The wheel... It brought together nations, helped win wars and pretty much carried civilizations to the modern age...and we still use it today....
-
No question about it, it has to be the wheel. think about it. how many inventions, past and present, would operate without the benefit of a wheel. The wheel has got to take the blue ribbon!!
-
If we divide up the time into ancient and modern eras I believe I would have to go for fire and the wheel. Written forms of language also for communications. Electricity generation and distribution would be in there for modern era though.
-
Well, if it weren't for computers, answerbag wouldn't be here, and no one would be talking to each other on here. Thousands of people wouldn't know some of their friends. I say strongly, COMPUTER!
-
My favorite as of this moment is the computer. If it was never invented, none of us would have so much fun, and get to communicate with so many nice people. Plus it helps in research for every subject or issue. And it's fun.
-
The microscope.
-
Sony company.
-
Electricity
-
Plumbing Clean water in, foul out. When that became routine, people stopped dying almost at random.
-
The Computer
-
the telegraph through it spawned further advances in communication, such as the telephone and later the use of the internet and cable lines for the t.v. this seemingly out of date, useless tool was the first practical, fast way to share news across wide expanses. This achievmenet brought about the age of communication. without said communication, how would news spread in time, how would anyone know of anything outside their local area. communication is our most important need. think about today, in this world and society, how wonderful and essential is it to know what's going on everywhere else?
-
ummmm, the toilet ( I know it sounds silly but can you imagine life without one?)
-
ANSWERBAG...no Seriously.
-
INTERNET!!!!!!!
-
The wedge. It is the basis of most tools that allowed us to increase productivity, produce surplus food, and develop beyond mere daily survival.
-
I must agree with the many experts who say that it was mechanized printing. The man who is given credit for the invention of the first practical method is Johannes Gutenberg. He came from an aristocratic background and therefore did not have to serve a regular apprenticeship yet he "got his hands dirty" and left behind a wonderful gift for each one of us. Gutenberg’s brainchild has been described as “the great German contribution to civilization.” Each surviving copy of his printing masterpiece—the so-called 42-line Gutenberg Bible—is now worth a fortune. Indeed, God's Word the Bible is priceless, a true treasure indeed when we apply what we learn in our daily lives.
-
The computer. It is probably one of the most useful tools available to us.
-
If you beleive in evolution then our eyes. If not then fire.
-
No question about it. Fire wasn't invented, but the wheel was. But, even if we never invented the wheel, we'd find substitutes. However, there's one thing that has allowed humans to progress or evolve faster than any other animal. That invention was MONEY!
-
definetly the microwave...it's simply ingenious
-
Internet
-
Those other things are great, however; if you think about it...the one thing that really makes all those items available to us is....MONEY! It has to be mankind's greatest concept!
-
The automobile. I can't tell you how free it makes me feel to know that with a minor portion of my bank account spent on gasoline that I could be down the coast and almost to California if I just HAD TO HAVE A BREAK FROM IT ALL. In the old days, I would have had to have enough money to stall a horse or hire a carriage and I wouldn't get NEAR far enough from my problems before I'd have to find some g.d. hay!

The lever. (Stick and stone to move/lift a weight). All other machines evolved from it.
-
Well, if we are being *truly serious* here, there are many that tie for tops in my mind. I'd go way back and say fire, then the wheel. To start. In later years, I'd pick harnessing electricity, the electric motor, combustion engine and then the automobile, the toilet, and then on to common things we take so much for granted in modern life like air conditioning, forced air furnaces for heating, and on and on. There have been many of them.
-
i'd like to say technology as a whole, being quite a broad statement its probably not a very interesting answer... i invent realities. that probably sounds bizarre but does an invention mean that its tactile? or are inventions metaphysical as well. I think they are what ever i want them to be ... to me. my mind and beliefs and soul and all of me that you cant see is to me the greatest invention of all time i reinvent myself daily by the nano second. if any one reading this understands what im saying id like to know you. not sure if they leave contact info but boogashuga at g mail is how to find me .... all those intrigued by this or any one wondering what i said meant feeel freeeeeeeee to hit me up.. --- idontnav2sleep2dream

The printing press... it brought the printed word to the general population and helped spread better educated people.
-
The printing press. It made knowledge and information available to everyone. When books were written by hand there were very few, they were very expensive and very few people knew how to read because there was no reason. We got our information by word of mouth, and I suspect that a large percentage was more propoganda than truth. Heck, a lot of our information today is propaganda! But we can read (on the internet too), have many avenues to explore and get closer to the truth than before because of the printing press.
