I am going to spend a few days in cenral CA. where is a nicer place to stay - Cambria, Pismo Beach or Avila beach?

I love Pismo beach. Its one of my favorite places here in California. =]

My vote goes to Pismo Beach also. Enough to see and do for all people from touristy to some secluded areas.... You are in a win-win-win situation though...
