I find chewing gum works well. The idea is keep the pressure in the middle ear (the area behind the ear drum) equal to the outside pressure. You may also try hold your nose and trying to blow through the blocked nasal passages. This is an old diving trick and has worked for me as well.

gum or barley sugar or hold your nose

Well my son was doing alot of flighing when he was little the flight attendence recommended that he chew gum and if the child was to small to chew gum they suggested that you get a pacifire or have them be drinking something during takeoff.

all you have to do is chew on something

I heard yawning repeatedly can help equalise the pressure. Not sure if there's anything to this, but it's worth a try.

Clear your ears frequently while climbing or descending. Like in scuba. Tried pluggin your nose and gently exhaling. Which should equalize the pressure. Maybe look up some intrnet sources on scuba and clearing of the ears.

This requires a little preparation or simply good habits in general. Keeping yourself hydrated can be important in the hours before the flight. Having enough fluids in your system before boarding allows time for the fluid in your inner ear to thin and thus drain properly. I have sinusitus which causes horrendous problems with inner ear pressure. Chewing gum, yawning, earplugs, all help as well, but hydration is extremely important. Nothing is a shure cure in all circumstances. I was on a flight to Raliegh-Durham years ago and did all the above including drinking a lot of water before and during the flight. The approach to Durham came directly over Langley Air base which reqired the flight to be at very high altitude on approach to Durham. This resulted in a rapid descent and very fast build up of cabin pressure. It felt like an ice pick driving into my ears. Sometimes you can do everything possible and it doesn't help at all. All of these suggestions will help to some extent in most circumstances though.

Chew gum. But don't worry, when the new 787 starts service, that won't be a problem anymore!
