Depends on how old the "child" is, and what the subject was.

My immediate first reaction would be anger. My kids know better than that, I hope. I'm afraid I'll encounter that at one time or another though as my eldest son is 15 years old and rebelliousness is part of growing up.

Well I have teenagers who did that - note I wrote DID that! First, I followed through on whatever I said. So, at first they pleaded ignorance, then forgetfulness and then they tried getting angry with me as if it were my fault that they lost 'whatever'. Still didn't work. Didn't move me. I often responded 'whatever' and walked away on them. Then one day THEY complained about my attitude and we had a sit down talk and I explained that I got my attitude from them. I cited occasions and situations and I explained why I did what I did and they actually listened to me and a lot of the old behaviour changed. Well, so far so good, now if only I could get them to wash the dishes AND dry them AND put them away AND clean their rooms AND feed the animals AND turn off lights and tv's .....

Usually after I said whatever to my Dad I walked away. Usually that would result in a whack to the back of the head or a swift kick in the ass. That solved my whatever problems.

this is probably one of the many reasons i never had any spawn. if they did this to me, they wouldn't be doing it a second time.
