  • Do you have any problems putting it into first gear? Or only shifting out of it?
  • You may have a failing first gear. It could be the synchros, but they usually do not cause problems when shifting out of the problem gear. Unless you want to dive into a possibly very pricey transmission repair I would recommend double-clutching that first gear. If you don't know how to do that, here's a brief explanation: 1) Put the shifter in neutral, clutch out. 2) Rev the engine just a tad (around 1000-1500rpm) - this spins the transmission 3) Stop revving and put the clutch in 4) Put it into first You should notice that it goes in a lot smoother. As for shifting out of the gear you probably just need to granny shift (take it slow) to avoid any further damage. Just so I'm clear, this vehicle is beyond warranty, was well maintained, and the transmission is otherwise in good shape? The fluid has been flushed and filled? New filter, etc? Thanks
  • Thank you so much for your assistance! It is out of warranty. I purchased it 1.5 yrs ago and had it completely checked out prior to purchase. It began after I was run off the road and onto a sidewalk 9 months ago, and is very intermittent. It does seem to correlate with the brakes somehow (hard or fast braking, or a "mushy" feel to the brakes before it happens). After the first time, I had it checked out by a tranny specialist who couldn't find anything wrong. There have only been 8k miles since the last full tranny service. Nto sure I want to pay for a tear down and rebuild if it may not solve the problem. Can you tell me how to double clutch an automatic? It has a manual option on the shifter, but the clutch is an auto. It sounds like a good idea to try, if I can make it work with this model. (+3 for each answer, since that is all I can give). Thank you!!
