  • WAR IS HELL! Many atrocites happen during a time of war and this was an example of that. Lt. William Calley was convicted of giving the orders to kill these people but may have been just a "scapegoat". We probably will never know the whole truth of why it happened.
  • Thank you Glen... yes it should read.. (OUR SOLDIERS) Soldiers never intentionally kill innocent people, but war is hell.. that was too bad they were killed.. When we were bombing Sadam Hussein, we always gave them 6 hours notice where we were going to bomb... then Hussein sent all the women and children to that location so that we would look bad... hmmm Hussein was the one killing the women and children..!! NOT US!! How about all the innocent people that were killed in the World Trade Center? Why aren't you appolled at that too??
  • Because the US soldiers stop to believe in the idea of innocent citizens. Since the Vietnamese were usingthe Guerilla warfare, they can disappear in the dense jungle after they attacked the US soldiers. They wear no noticeable uniform. Thus it is very hard for the US soldiers to identify where their enemies were. Same principle, in My Lai, the US soldiers just shoot whoever they see. They feared that some of the disguised Viet Cong might stab them in the back
  • I suppose the most accurate answer would be that sometimes things just get out of hand. Atrocities have occured in every war commited by every army. My University professor told me of how he was ordered to kill anything that moved (men, women, children, cats, dogs, rats, anything) in a town in Germany in World War II. All that really needs to occur is for the soldiers to believe that they will be protected from prosecution by their governments. The soldiers of every army have committed atrocities and been protected by their respective governments for them. Where I believe Calley made his mistake was to let pictures be taken. Same as those stupid guys in that Iraqi prison. For my part I took part in the bombing campaign of North and South Vietnam in which thousands of "innocent" people died. I can't say I see any difference between being killed by a bullet or a 500 lb bomb.
