When I have my 1997 toyota camry w/auto trans on cruise control going down a hill it jerks off and on as it is going down the hill. Going up the hill and on level road it is fine. Can someone tell me what is wrong and how to fix it. Thanks

Some automatics try to downshift when descending so as to benefit from engine braking. I know Saturn S-series did this, but I am not sure if Camry's ever did.

If that IS what is happening though, bear in mind that for a given speed the required throttle positions for different gears is different and the cruise control may take a little time to adjust to the gear-hunting.

I have two older cars with cruise and if I manually downshift on a downhill (they lack the sophistication to do so themselves) the cruise goes haywire for approximately 2 seconds as it seeks to maintain speed.
